Public Lecture and Workshop: How to Read Elizabethan Spy Letters! With Emily Montford

Public Lecture and Workshop: How to Read Elizabethan Spy Letters! With Emily Montford

Wednesday 1st December, 18.00-19.30, the Ballroom

In this lecture, Emily Montford will look at the messages written for covert operations in the sixteenth century, demonstrating how we can decipher encrypted writing and look for clues in the material features of these letters. In using these Tudor spy letters, Emily will demonstrate how we can use surviving documents from the early modern period to understand the culture of secrecy embedded in Elizabethan culture.

This lecture will be followed by a workshop where you can have a go at creating your very own Tudor spy letter!
