We are located within the beautiful East Sussex countryside with no regular public transport service to the estate. For this reason, most people travel to us by car. However, as we are embracing the green tourism initiative and currently working towards achieving ‘Green Flag Award’ accreditation, we would like to encourage visitors to share our ethos and consider a more sustainable option if possible. As such, in addition to the following directions by car, we have also included a few alternative ways of reaching us.

Car (with satellite navigation)
Enter our postcode BN27 1RN. Please note that some older satnavs may direct you to the wrong entrance so in place of the postcode we suggest you enter Wartling Road as your destination. Our coordinates are 50.8685865, 0.348961
From the North (A22/A267)
At the Boship Roundabout, head east on the A271 for approximately 9.6 km (6 miles). Wartling Road is a right hand turning just beyond Windmill Hill.
From the West (A27)
At Polegate, continue along the A27 (Polegate Bypass) to the roundabout at Pevensey. Take the first exit onto Wartling Road. Follow the road for approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) until you see our signage on your left.
From the East (A259)
Continue along the A259 to Pevensey roundabout, take the 4th exit onto Wartling Road and follow the directions above.
Although cyclists can use the above directions for drivers, they should be aware that Wartling Road can be precarious due to fast cars narrow lanes and blind corners. A safer route with less traffic is via Chapel Row, leading to Church Road. You can then enter the west side of the estate by following the 1066 Country walk signs.
Proceed along the 1066 path until you reach the comet sculpture and information board. Please note that the path can be muddy at times and is best suited to off road bikes although others can be wheeled. At the sculpture exit left with The Observatory Science Centre in front of you and proceed to the junction. Turn left and our ticket kiosk is straight ahead.
The cycle route from Polegate train station to the castle takes approximately 45 minutes across the tranquil Pevensey Levels via Rickney and will also bring you to the west entrance mentioned above.
If you live or are holidaying in and around Eastbourne, Cuckmere Buses run a service (49) to and from the Herstmonceux Castle Estate each Wednesday between February and October. It allows for a three hour visit between arrival and departure. Alternatively, if you are a keen walker, why not use the service to reach us and then head back to Pevensey on the 1066 Country Walk. Even if you visit regularly during the week, why not leave the car at home occasionally and use the 49 service, maybe accompanied by friends or family. For more information, visit Cuckmere Buses website
The nearest train station is located at Polegate, approximately 14.5km (9 miles) from us. If you are travelling with your bike, please refer to the Bicycle section above.
There are usually taxis waiting outside the station, but you can also book in advance. See below.

In addition to the 1066 Country Walk, there are numerous footpaths and bridleways adjacent to the estate together with quiet back lanes. With the appropriate Ordnance Survey map, we are accessible from a number of local towns, villages, and hamlets. As with the cycling option, please purchase your ticket online in advance and be prepared to show it if requested by a member of our security team.
